Characterization of a two-dimensional subsurface object with an effective scattering model

چکیده
The problem of the location and characterization of a two-dimensional (2-D) subsurface object is formulated as the inverse problem for an effective scattering model. An arbitrary finite-sized buried object is described as a subsurface circular cylinder with the radius, permittivity, and position of its center to be determined. The inversion is performed in a nonlinearized way, minimizing the discrepancy between the actual scattered field and that of the effective scattering model. A simple and quick solution for a circular cylinder embedded in a lossy half space is introduced. As far as numerical efficiency is concerned, the obtained approximate algorithm is comparable to the freespace solution. The location algorithm has been tested with the two-dimensional models of plastic antipersonnel land mines.

A New Guideline for the Allocation of Multipoles in the Multiple Multipole Method for Two Dimensional Scattering from Dielectrics
A new guideline for proper allocation of multipoles in the multiple multipole method (MMP) is proposed. In an ‘a posteriori’ approach, subspace fitting (SSF) is used to find the best location of multipole expansions for the two dimensional dielectric scattering problem. It is shown that the best location of multipole expansions (regarding their global approximating power) coincides with the med...
متن کاملPredicting Depth and Path of Subsurface Crack Propagation at Gear Tooth Flank under Cyclic Contact Loading
In this paper, a two-dimensional computational model is proposed for predicting the initiation position and propagation path of subsurface crack of spur gear tooth flank. In order to simulate the contact of teeth, an equivalent model of two contacting cylinders is used. The problem is assumed to be under linear elastic fracture mechanic conditions and finite element method is used for numerical...
متن کاملEfficient Analysis of Plasmonic circuits using Differential Global Surface Impedance (DGSI) Model
Differential global surface impedance (DGSI) model, a rigorous approach, has been applied to the analysis of three dimensional plasmonic circuits. This model gives a global relation between the tangential electric field and the equivalent surface electric current on the boundary of an object. This approach helps one bring the unknowns to the boundary surface of an object and so avoid volumetric...
متن کاملSpace as a Semiotic Object: A Three-Dimensional Model of Vertical Structure of Space in Calvino’s Invisible Cities
Following the “spatial turn” of the last 3 decades in humanities and social sciences and the structure of semiotic object, this research studies space as the main semiotic object of Calvino’s (1972) Invisible Cities. Significance of this application resides in examining the possibility of providing a more concrete methodology based on the integration of Zoran’s (1984) 3 vertical levels of const...
متن کاملElectromagnetic detection of buried dielectric targets
Abstrucf-Scattering from subsurface objects is studied using the T-matrix method. The scatterer is represented as a dielectric ellipsoid and the source is assumed to be an electric dipole in a borehole. This approach easily accommodates rotations of the scatterer relative to the source and also permits relaxation of the two-dimensional constraint inherent in some models. In addition, it provide...
